Eight months after its launch, the free Thrive Global Cookbook from Thrive Global and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan has proven to be more than a collection of recipes — it has fostered community health and engagement.

Since it was released in November 2024, the cookbook has drawn over 43,000 pageviews, thousands of downloads, and is used in community cooking classes and nutrition programs in Los Angeles and San Diego counties. The top three most-viewed recipes are three-ingredient pancakes, edible chocolate chip cookie dough and quick burrito bowls. The cookbook is now available online in the 11 commonly spoken languages of the diverse communities Blue Shield Promise serves. Cookbook languages include Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, English, Farsi, Khmer, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. The free cookbook, which features healthy recipes from celebrity chefs like José Andrés and Ina Garten, is part of a broader Blue Shield Promise effort to raise awareness about health and wellness by promoting healthy cooking.

“The cookbook represents our ongoing commitment to comprehensive, whole-person care for communities most impacted by food-related chronic illness, such as diabetes and heart disease,” said Kristen Cerf, president and CEO of Blue Shield Promise. “We know that better food can lead to better health.”

Grassroots impact in San Diego

In San Diego County, community partners including Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center, Casa Familiar, Inc., and Kitchens For Good are highlighting the cookbook through local events and educational programs. The organizations initially helped test and prepare recipes for the cookbook and have continued to use it as a resource.

One of the most active community advocates is Rosamaria Barrientos, a volunteer and graduate of Olivewood’s “Cooking for Salud” program. Barrientos uses the cookbook to lead nutrition sessions at schools in National City where 28.6% of residents receive Medi-Cal, compared to 18.9% nationwide, helping students and parents discover healthy recipe alternatives.

She recently facilitated a cooking demo using a recipe from the Thrive Global Cookbook.

“All the ingredients are available at any store and very inexpensive,” Barrientos said, explaining how cookbook recipes are crafted with the unique needs of the community in mind. “It is a complete meal rich in nutrients, and best of all it's easy and quick to make.”

Barrientos also uses the cookbook in her own kitchen and noted that her family loves the four-ingredient peanut butter and blueberry muffin recipe. “We can eat more of these goodies without affecting [our] blood glucose that much, and the taste and consistency is the same as the ones made with wheat flour.”

Daily habits, big impact

The Thrive Global Cookbook is rooted in the idea that small, sustainable changes — like cooking a few healthy meals each week — can lead to better long-term health outcomes. It also reflects Thrive Global’s philosophy that behaviors such as sleep, movement, stress management and nutrition are all interconnected.

“In addition to sleep, movement, managing stress and connecting with others, food is a daily behavior Thrive Global is focused on changing to improve individual health and well-being,” said Arianna Huffington, founder and CEO of Thrive Global. “What we eat fuels our energy, focus and productivity."

The cookbook also inspired Nourish Together, a campaign led by the Thrive Global Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Thrive Global. The initiative aims to expand access to nutritious eating by providing knowledge, tools, and resources that make healthy choices more affordable, practical, and sustainable. Developed in deep collaboration with community-based organizations, Nourish Together is designed to meet people where they are and reflect the cultural and logistical realities of the communities it serves. The campaign brings together free access to the Thrive Global Cookbook, shoppable digital recipes via Instacart, and high-quality kitchen appliances donated by SharkNinja, along with educational content delivered by trusted local partners. By providing practical support and empowering people to take small, actionable steps, Nourish Together transforms everyday habits into pathways toward lifelong health.

Bringing healthy cooking to more communities

In the coming months, Blue Shield Promise will continue to host cooking demonstrations and distribute cookbooks at community events throughout Southern California. Plans are underway to expand the integration of cookbook content into other community-based nutrition classes.

“We’re delighted the cookbook has been so well received by communities throughout California and with our members,” said Cerf. “The recipes are being used to teach nutrition, communities are embracing healthier habits, and we’re excited to build on this success.”
